Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Controversies and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing effort to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or wealth.
