Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in power within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to begin their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team understands precisely where to head next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and advises that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as important members in House Halovar could help the team reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are hunted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Fans can expect finding out which players will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
