Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then discovered numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials say early analysis show the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for details.

An important representative commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
